Since 1922, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) has led the way in sponsoring Fire Prevention Week, an initiative aimed at raising awareness about fire safety. In 1925, President Calvin Coolidge declared Fire Prevention Week a national observance, making it the longest-running public health campaign in U.S. history.
Each year, during Fire Prevention Week, people of all ages - children, adults, and educators - learn critical fire safety tips. Firefighters and safety professionals provide invaluable public education designed to drastically reduce fire-related injuries and deaths.
The week of October 9th is chosen for this observance in remembrance of the Great Chicago Fire, which began on October 8, 1871. This catastrophic event claimed more than 250 lives, left 100,000 people homeless, and destroyed over 17,400 buildings while scorching more than 2,000 acres. The lessons learned from this tragedy continue to fuel efforts to improve fire safety nationwide.
